After the death of Gediminas, the rulers of the state became his sons Algirdas and Kestutis. During this successful diarchy that lasted more than three decades, the territory of Lithuania has doubled. Kęstutis defended the western borders from the attacks of Teutonic and Livonian Orders. Algirdas took care of the eastern parts of the country and the Ruthenian lands.
