Book smuggling was a phenomenon that has no equivalent in history. When Lithuanian language and press were banned (from 1864 to 1904), a new patriotic wave was born, fueled by the book smugglers, who were distributing Lithuanian press. This cultural movement is considered as part of the Lithuanian national movement, which laid a foundation for the Lithuanian independence in 1918. In the medal I've depicted the sculpture of a book smuggler (made by J. Zikaras in 1928), in the background stands the most famous monthlies: "Varpas", "Szaltinelis", "Auksa Altorius", "Auszra".
As far as I know, this is the first medal for the commemoration of the book smugglers.
